Seedling thoughts, Maastricht 2000, installation, 18 m²
Seedling thoughts, I imagine a field of thoughts before they are thought. Before they are harvested. Like a foetus waiting to be born. Some have a red line woven in to them. These represent key thoughts that play a role in the red thread of somebody's life. The way the forms are spread and hung from the ceiling represent the way we grow certain plants, but even more important, the lines represent that all thoughts move in fields. Like the foetus feeds from the umbilical cord, I imagine thoughts feed from invisible fields that surround us. What are these fields? The shared unconscious from Jung? Are our thoughts connected with quantum field theories?
“Quantum physics predicts the existence of an underlying sea of zero-point energy at every point in the universe. This is different from the cosmic microwave background and is also referred to as the electromagnetic quantum vacuum since it is the lowest state of otherwise empty space. This energy is so enormous that most physicists believe that even though zero-point energy seems to be an inescapable consequence of elementary quantum theory, it cannot be physically real, and so is subtracted away in calculations.”
Material: Small rough straps of textile (unbleached cotton +/- 5 cm wide and 50 cm long) folded over each other. The ends are held together by crêpe tape. The forms hang from the ceiling by threads. The bottom rests on the floor. The weight of the material makes it possible for passing viewer to make the egg like shapes vibrate. A reoccurring element in my work.
